Background Note: In 1886 six women met to make plans for the organization of the Drummond Club, which was named for Henry Drummond, author of “The Greatest Thing in the World”, the first book read as part of the group’s program. The club continued to meet for literary study and discussion of the needs of the community and other “pertinent topics”. In the words of the charter members, the club has always stood for “love, loyalty, purity of thought, and action.”
Over the years, the Drummond Club has contributed funds to Grinnell College, foreign missions, and Uncle Sam’s Club as well as other causes. In 1895 the group first donated money for books to the city’s Reading Room and has continued to make frequent donations to enhance the collections of Stewart and Drake Community Libraries. In 1986 the Drummond Club celebrated its 100th year.
