Background Note: DAR items combined from both the estate of DAR member Elizabeth Ann (Anne) Bohstedt and from the DAR Grinnell Chapter via Gail Bonath. According to a commemoration card describing the first organizational meeting (included in this collection), the organizing date of the Grinnell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was January 1, 1912, when the State Regent, Mrs. Marston of Ames, Iowa, came to Grinnell for the first meeting of twenty-six ladies. The Organizing Regent was Mrs. Cleodora Hitchcock Grinnell. The officers installed were Regent: Mrs. George Grinnell (Cleodora); Vice-Regent: Mrs. D. H. Snook (Edith); Recording Secretary: Miss Margaret Miller; Corresponding Secretary: Miss Pearl Cessna; Treasurer: Miss Helen LaGrange; Registrar: Miss Georgiana Holloway; Historian Miss Amy Noll. The chapter’s chosen colors were blue and white. A quote from the commemoration card indicates one of the items of business: “Mrs. Grinnell discussed the future work of the local chapter. The most noted historical spot in Grinnell is the old J. B. Grinnell homestead. She made the announcement that a philanthropic citizen of Grinnell may buy the place and give it to the Grinnell Chapter to have always as a ladies’ club house for Grinnell.” As it turned out, this hoped-for event was not to be. Charter Members of the Grinnell Chapter of the DAR were Deliah Briggs Breed, Martha Onthank Brown, Bessie Campbell, Maud Cessna, Myrtle Pearl Cessna, Cleodora Hitchcock Grinnell, Grace Hays, Rosa Hays, Georgiana Holloway, Nelle Holloway, Helen LaGrange, Blanche Lytle, Margaret Miller, May Noll, Alma Proctor, Helen Proctor, Mary Proctor Ramsey, Estella Ricker, Grace Noll Smith, Edith Leffingwell Snook, and Ethel Graves Yeager.
