Background Note: Church Women United of Grinnell was organized in 1950 as an affiliate of the national, ecumenical movement, Church Women United. Its formal purpose is to encourage women to come together to witness their faith in Christ and to enter new vocations so as to make possible a new and better quality of life. Emphasis is placed on certain needs on different days throughout the year with 3 programs celebrated annually: World Day of Prayer (March), May Fellowship Day, and World Community Day (November).

Projects sponsored by the organization have included the collection of blankets for those in need in the U.S. and overseas, clothing collection for Church World Service, transportation for Grinnell College students to the Iowa Board of International Education Foreign Student Weekend in Des Moines, and assistance with scholarships for Iowa American Indian girls. In 1956, Church Women United sponsored a displaced persons family through Friends Service, and in the late 60s was instrumental
in the organization of the Grinnell Community Day Care Center.
