Background Note: John (Uncle Johnny) Brown, born in September 1814 in Somersetshire, England, came to Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1852 with his wife Maria and nine children. He arrived in Poweshiek County in 1854, settling first in Washington Township, and then moving in the early 60s to Grinnell, where he and his wife resided in their home on Main between 5th &
6th Avenues. He was a dealer in meat and grain products, a mill-owner, and the proprietor of the Hawkeye Hotel. One of the earliest settlers in the area, he died in June 1899.

Ella Brown Brownell, the granddaughter of Uncle Johnny Brown and the daughter of John and Mary Brown of Westfield,, married Curtis Powell Brownell in 1889. In her later years, she lived with her daughter, Ruth, in Bellingham, Washington, until her death in 1972. The photographs and memorabilia included in the collection belonged to her.
