Summary: Born in Whistler, Alabama, Alphonse Heninburg, the third recipient of the Rosenwald award, was a successful student and member of Phi Beta Kappa. He recalls he faced racial discrimination while at Grinnell College. After Grinnell, Heninburg worked at Slater State Normal School in Winston-Salem for a short time before leaving for France to study at the Sorbonne.
