Background Note: The orphan train movement was organized in 1853 in order to find homes for children from the streets and orphanages on the east coast, primarily New York City. Trains made stops in Grinnell in 1893, 1899 and 1904. The movement ultimately brought 8,000 homeless children to Iowa.
