Background Note: On May 9, 1890 the first meeting of the Ladies Cemetery Association was held at which the organization was permanently organized and plans were made to raise money for the improvement of the cemetery. The association was incorporated on May 22, 1891, the year in which the Perpetual Care Fund was established. With the cooperation of the city, water mains were laid in 1896 and a bridge built in 1913. The association was responsible for the landscaping and beautification of the grounds. In October 1917 income from all properties and funds was transferred to the City Treasurer with right of expenditure remaining with the association. The association continued its oversight until 1955 when the cemetery was turned over to the city of Grinnell.
