Bill Ingram Collection of Early Modern French Manuscript Business Documents

Folder 1 contains two manuscript documents written in French in the 16th century.  One of the documents is from Jehan Hurault, the royal counselor and master of requests, regarding a dispute on the right to collect taxes on cloth sold in bulk and the "eighth" on wine sold retail in taverns in one section of the city of Paris.  The other has not been translated or transcribed.

The collection consists of photocopies of letters and business papers of Horace Alanson Wolcott. Wolcott lived briefly in Grinnell about 1856 then moved to Boulder probably in the early or mid 1860s, and corresponded with people in Grinnell. Papers selected for photocopying are those relating to his Grinnell connections.  Correspondents include: Marshall Bliss of Bliss Crosby Mill, Grinnell; S. H. Business Diary of 1862, 1863 Hardin County, Iowa

This handwritten ledger diary was begun on January 1, 1862 in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa. Unknown writer discusses property purchases and disposals; loans and payments; tax information; names of those people with whom he (or she) dealt; on one occasion, the writer asks, “Is he a judge entitled to my respect?” (March 10, 1862). Diary includes long discourses on business dealings (see April 19, 1862). May 20, 1862 entry includes some pressed leaves and a flower. October 4, 1862 entry includes a larger pressed flower. Last entry on February 6, 1863: “I gave up key of the office I occupied up to today in the Court House in Eldora to Ellis Parker(?) as the agent and proper officer of the Eldora Court House joint stock company who claim to own the building. I left some things in the room ….Started about middle of afternoon from Eldora for Grinnell, Iowa, designing to make Grinnell my residence.”

The bulk of the collection contains correspondence and reports concerning Reed's work of the American Home Missionary Society of the Congregational Church in the 1845-1869. Among the topics addressed are slavery and how the church should regard congregations in slave-holding states, founding of churches in Iowa, church finances, and founding a college in Iowa. This is a rich collection for the study of early Congregationalism in Iowa.
