This handwritten ledger diary was begun on January 1, 1862 in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa. Unknown writer discusses property purchases and disposals; loans and payments; tax information; names of those people with whom he (or she) dealt; on one occasion, the writer asks, “Is he a judge entitled to my respect?” (March 10, 1862). Diary includes long discourses on business dealings (see April 19, 1862). May 20, 1862 entry includes some pressed leaves and a flower. October 4, 1862 entry includes a larger pressed flower. Last entry on February 6, 1863: “I gave up key of the office I occupied up to today in the Court House in Eldora to Ellis Parker(?) as the agent and proper officer of the Eldora Court House joint stock company who claim to own the building. I left some things in the room ….Started about middle of afternoon from Eldora for Grinnell, Iowa, designing to make Grinnell my residence.”

Consists of one letter written to George Lanman with a sketch of his life wiritten intended for inclusion in the Congressional Dictionary.

Consists of transcripts and biographical material for Grinnell students. All information is considered confidential under provisions of 20 U.S.C Section 1232(g) (1982), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended.

The records consist of ledgers and notebooks documenting financial information, minutes of Church meetings, members and pastors including their responsibilities and actions within the Church. There is also a file of guest attendance.

Lenabel Body Courtney was interviewed by her grandson, J. Courtney Wilson, in January, February, August and December 1977. The collection consists of 15 cassette tapes and transcripts of approximately 230 typed pages, the transcript for each tape having an index of topics discussed.

The records include ledgers and notebooks with financial information and minutes of meetings of the Church and of groups affiliated with the Church:  the DK Society, the Women's Home and Foreign Missionary Society, and the Ladies' Social Society.  There are files of correspondence and legal and financial records.

The collection consists of a letter from Chekhov’s sister, a replica of Chekhov’s letter (November 2, 1903) to Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko (co-founder of the Moscow Art Theatre), and a note (June 14, 1985) from Kennan explaining the provenance of the Chekhov letter. Also included are photocopies in Russian.

This small collection includes both personal and professional papers. His personal papers contain correspondence and the diary of a trip to California. Two letters of note are one from his wife written while he was abroad; they numbered their letters to each other and she began by noting which ones of his she had received. Another letter is from a friend in the Red Cross, discussing post-war events in Europe. A typed title page to the diary (which is handwritten) gives the trip’s date as 1927. If that is correct, then the diary was not written by Peck (perhaps by his wife?).

The professional papers include some course syllabi and other academic materials and a file of materials relating to a Grinnell College Endowment Campaign.

P.E. Somers, M.D., was a physician working in Poweshiek county from at least 1903 until 1927. He was a member of the Poweshiek County Medical Society, and served as its secretary and treasurer. These volumes contain lists of those he treated.

The Harold L. Clapp papers consist of talks; unpublished articles, stories, books, verse, and translations; newspaper clippings about Clapp; and correspondence.  One published book is reproduced here; other published works are listed in Appendix A.  The papers span the years 1929-61, with the bulk of the material between 1947 and 1961. Mr. Clapp was very concerned about American public primary and secondary education and in teacher training, favoring greater emphasis on basic elementary subjects.  Much of the collections records his active work in this area, speaking and writing and working for the Council for Basic Education in Washington, D.C.  This interest began with his observations of his sons’ education in Swiss public schools during the family’s year in Geneva, 1947-48.  The year is described in detail in letters written by HLC and Laura Clapp and in Laura Clapp’s introductory pages to the letters.  All of these are in “Letters from Switzerland,” the first series in the Clapp papers.  The Swiss letters also describe living and travel conditions and problems of American students in post-war Europe. Mr. Clapp’s ideas on education are most fully documented I the series Council for Basic Education, Talks, and Published and Unpublished Writings.  French Play School shows the practical application of his ideas.  His fiction (three books) was satire on American education.  Other than the Manual for French A2 the papers contain very little directly relating to Mr. Clapp’s teaching of French at Grinnell College. Laura Clapp transcribed by hand or had typed some of the papers because the originals were difficult to read.  She collected and in part arranged the material and appended explanatory notes where she felt they would help a reader better understand her husband’s writings.  Excerpts from her letters to her mother (series 10) describe some campus events of the 1940s and ‘50s.

Consists of material written by, about, and for Charles H. Foster.  Included are copies of lectures given by Foster, book reviews written by and about him, and correspondence with colleagues and friends.  This collection contains copies of correspondence written by Foster to Robert Frost and also letters received by Foster from MacKinlay Kantor, Paul Engle, Perry Miller, Curt Harnack, and Joseph F. Wall.  Additionally, this collection includes unpublished manuscripts (one incomplete) by Foster.  Also included are two signed Perry Miller books that were given to Foster from Miller.
