Biographical history
Dr. Conard (1874-1971) received the B.S. and M.A. degrees from Haverford College and received a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1901. He was member of the Department of Biology at Grinnell College from 1906 to 1944. He was a botanist, a bryologist, and an authority on bryophytes (especially the mosses) and waterlilies.

The collection contains some of Conard's correspondence and newspaper clippings of articles about him. There are also typed manuscripts of some of his articles, as well as several journals to which he contributed articles.

Professor Conard’s papers were donated to Grinnell College Archives in 1980 by his daughter, Rebecca Conard French. Later additions came from Biology Department at University of Northern Iowa, from the Science Building (via Ben Graham), and from Dr. Conard’s granddaughter Laura Bickers (via Jon Andelson).
