Background Note: The Child, Walker, and Bartlett families originated in Bath, New Hampshire,
and came to the Grinnell area in the mid-1800’s. A family history has been recorded in the ledger of a livery stable (A.W. Child operated a livery stable at one time.) and consists of genealogical information, obituaries and other news clippings. Included is a copy of the Grinnell Herald Extra of February 9,1914 documenting a fire at the Laros Buggy Factory. The identity of the writer, who refers to Capt. John Child as “my great grandfather”, is not evident, but he/she may be one of the children of A.L. Child, a prominent Grinnell photographer.
A second ledger from the livery stable covering portions of the years 1882-83 follows the same format. Handwritten entries refer to Ezra and Sarah Child as “uncle and aunt”, and the handwriting is identical. The fragile condition of the ledger precludes Xeroxing of most of the news articles, and several pages have been cut.
Among entries in the second ledger are articles pertaining to the Child Photo Studio fire; Harry & Grace McMurray’s wedding; Rev. E.M. Vittum’s last sermon and the obituary bulletin for Annie Griswold Vittum. Addresses given at Grinnell’s Semi-Centennial and the “Extra” published on March 10, 1916 on the occasion of Billy Robinson’s death are among the items copied..
