John Forrest Chapman Papers 1924-1927

John Forrest Chapman graduated from Grinnell College in 1924. He taught 1924-26 in the Grinnell-in-China program at the Porter Middle School near Techow in the northern part of Shantung province and at Anatolia College, Thessaloniki, Greece, 1926-27.

John and Louise Nollen Correspondence 1906-1932

The collection consists primarily of letters written to John Nollen from members of his family 1906-32.  Correspondents include his parents, his wife, Louise, brother Henry, and his sisters Hanna and Sara.  The two sisters taught 1929-33 at Anatolia College, Salonika, Greece.  The collection includes their letters to John as well as typed copies of their letters to other members of the family and contain descriptions of their travels during those years.

George Drake Family Papers 1861-2000

President George Drake and his brother, Professor Richard Drake of Berea College, donated family papers to Grinnell College Archives January 1991.  The bulk of the material is from their father, George Bryant Drake. It consists of correspondence, notes for sermons, family financial and business records, clippings, photographs, ca. 1920s-80s.  One box contains writings of Richard Drake, one box correspondence and writings of George Drake and family, one box papers of Alberta Drake, a box of Nell Drake's writings and publications.

George Bryant Drake (1895-1979) was a Congregational Minister and President of Doane College in Nebraska. He and his wife, Alberta Stimson Drake, had three children: George Albert Drake (1934-), professor and President of Grinnell College; Richard Bryant Drake (1925-), professor at Berea College; and Alberta Jane Drake (1928-). George Bryant was called Bryant; his parents were Nellie Jennie Rice Drake and George Burton Drake.

The collection contains some of Conard's correspondence and newspaper clippings of articles about him.  There are also typed manuscripts of some of his articles, as well as several journals to which he contributed articles.

Paul Henson Appleby Papers 1891-1963

The collection deals mainly with Paul H. Appleby, although there are items of interest concerning other members of the Appleby family. The entirety of Paul’s life is included, both political and personal aspects. There are several personal and political photographs and pieces of correspondence. There are also pieces of Grinnell College memorabilia from both Paul’s and Mary Ellen’s time here. There are several noteworthy items in this collection, especially letters to Paul from Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon Baines Johnson (written when he was a Congressman) and a letter of condolence from John Fitzgerald Kennedy after Paul’s death. There are also several other moving letters of condolence from many important political figures and they arrive from all over the world. Especially interesting are the ones written after John Kennedy’s assassination a month after Paul’s passing. There are photo albums and several other pictures showing Grinnell College campus life in the early part of the twentieth century. Many of Paul’s writings are also in the collection, including stories written for The Unit; several issues of a magazine he published in his youth, The Chum; and numerous articles published during his political career.

Materials in the collection often refer to family member by initials. PHA is Paul Henson Appleby, RMA is Ruth Meyer Appleby and ME is Mary Ellen Appleby Sarbaugh.

Other collections of interest are the Mary Ellen Appleby Sarbaugh Papers and the Florence Kerr papers.

Collection of Haitian Presidential autographs, comprising autograph and partly printed documents on executive stationary, signed by eleven Presidents of the Republic of Haiti from Alexandre Pétion to Philippe Sudre Dartiguenave. 20 items, single sheet printed letterhead or partly printed documents, accomplished in ink dated and signed, with two printed broadsides. Most Port-au-Prince: 1812-1916.

Rare Wallenberg Swiss Embassy Protective Document. One single paged typed document on letterhead of the Swiss Embassy. Represents a piece of official documentation which was from a larger group of Wallenberg Schutz-Pass protective documents. Also includes photocopies of documents referenced in the protective document.

Florence Stewart and Robert Kerr Papers 1917-1963 1937-1948

The collection contains an oral interview with Florence Kerr; photographs, personal correspondence (notably with President and Mrs. Roosevelt), and other items unrelated to her business life; correspondence and other materials relating to her defense activities in 1941; and materials from two productions of the Federal Theater Project.

The bulk of the collection contains correspondence, memos, and reports from her tenure with the Work Projects Administration and includes numerous WPA publications.  There are two photograph albums and ten scrapbooks of newspaper clippings regarding her WPA activities.

Also included is correspondence of her husband, Robert Y. Kerr.

James McNally photograph collection 1857-1961

James McNally collected photographs, both black-and-white and color, that depict buildings and Grinnell scenes from about 1857-1961.  The collection of photographs has been donated to Stewart Library.

Copies of outstanding and representative pictures in the collection were made into slides and the slides donated to the archives.  Vera provided the descriptions of the photographs in 1983.  There are two sets of slides: the original slides and another set that are loaded into a carousel.  The latter set may be borrowed with approval of the College Archivist.
