George T. McJimsey Papers 1904-1970's

This collection was gathered by George T. McJimsey, professor of History at Iowa State University, in the process of writing his book Harry Hopkins: Ally of the Poor and Defender of Democracy. Included are articles written by Hopkins, his personal and professional correspondence, WPA files, minutes from the meetings of the American Association of Social Workers, War Munitions Board minutes, Lend- Lease files, diary entries of top government officials, American Red Cross files among others.

The collection contains information relevant not only to researchers studying Hopkins but also Roosevelt, World War II, Lend- Lease, the New Deal, social work, the American Red Cross, Secretary of War Henry Stimson, the FERA, WPA, CWA, American Association of Social Workers, New York BCW, and NYTBA.

The research is drawn from several collections including the Hopkins Papers at the FDR Library in Hyde Park, the National Archives, the George C. Marshall Papers, the Social Work History Archives in Minneapolis, the Harry S. Truman Library, Parks Library of Iowa State University, New York State Library at Albany, the Library of Congress, University of Virginia Library, the Houghton Library of Harvard University among many others.

John P. Ryan Papers 1923-1953

Consists of notebooks containing records of the books Ryan read. His daughter, Jean, noted: “It shows his thoroughness, organization, and wide range of interest.” Only a few Lesson Plans are included in Ryan’s papers, including some for Fundamentals of Speech, Parliamentary Law, and one of his adult education classes in Des Moines. Correspondence includes two letters from Ryan to his daughter and son-in-law. The letter dated October 22, 1947 was “Ryan’s last letter written from Grinnell after retirement, and just before leaving to live on the West Coast.” [Jean Squires’ note] The typed letter was received after Ryan’s death by his wife from a Des Moines businessman who was a former member of Ryan’s classes there.

The material is both business related and personal in nature, including several articles written by Stiles, a series of request and thank you letters for copies of his book, Manual of Public Archives of Iowa, work recommendations, literature relating to the American Historical Association, general correspondence and a paper written by Fleming C. Fraker, Cassius C. Stiles and the Public Archives of Iowa.

John Dashiell Stoops Papers 1890-1973

John Dashiell Stoops was a professor of Philosophy at Iowa/Grinnell College from 1904 to 1943 and Professor Emeritus from 1943 until his death in 1973.  This collection of his papers, donated by Rose Stoops, is dated from 1904 to 1950s and includes manuscripts, notes, and correspondence.

Joan Zimmerman Alumni Questionnaire 1976

This collection consists of photocopies of completed questionnaires Joan Zimmerman, (class of 1971) received in November 1976 for use in her Ph. D. dissertation, College Culture in The Midwest, 1880-1930, University of Virginia, 1978. The 46 replies are from women who graduated between 1894 and 1916 and deal with their academic, extracurricular, and social interests and activities during and after their college years. Original copies of the questionnaires are in the possession of Dr. Zimmerman.
