Papers and administrative materials documenting the work of the Office of the Dean.  Some materials may be confidential and not available for research.

There has been a person serving in the capacity of Dean of the Faculty/College since 1944. The exact titles changed over the years and the duties varied, but essentially these persons served similar functions.

In the 1958 North Central Association report to the College, the Dean of the College was responsible for being the academic assistant to the President and the person to assume leadership in the absence of the President.

In 1968 the Dean was described as the person who cooperates with the President in the administration of the academic affairs of the College; who advises the President on academic and other matters; and who represents the President in his/her absence unless an Acting President had been appointed by the Trustees. The Dean also served as Chair of the Faculty Committee on Academic Standing, Chair of the Faculty committee on Admissions and Student Aid, and as a member of the Faculty Executive Council. When the College was seeking a new Dean of the Faculty in 1980, the principal responsibilities of the Dean were to provide leadership in working with the President and the Faculty in areas of curriculum, faculty development, and maintenance of the quality of the academic profram. Consists of meeting minutes, treasurer's records, programs, photographs, one issue of the Searchlight Magazine, and a book manuscript.

The collection consists of a letter from Chekhov’s sister, a replica of Chekhov’s letter (November 2, 1903) to Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko (co-founder of the Moscow Art Theatre), and a note (June 14, 1985) from Kennan explaining the provenance of the Chekhov letter. Also included are photocopies in Russian.

Arthur C. Risser Sr. was a member of the Grinnell College class of 1929. His publications are about theatre design, particular regarding stage lighting and sight lines.

Course materials include readings, syllabi, class notes, and papers. Campus Democrat materials include correspondence, Iowa Democratic Convention 1990 materials, and party platform information.

Materials concerning the management of and products sold by the Grinnell College Bookstore during the 1970s-1990s.

P.E. Somers, M.D., was a physician working in Poweshiek county from at least 1903 until 1927. He was a member of the Poweshiek County Medical Society, and served as its secretary and treasurer. These volumes contain lists of those he treated.

The records include ledgers and notebooks with financial information and minutes of meetings of the Church and of groups affiliated with the Church:  the DK Society, the Women's Home and Foreign Missionary Society, and the Ladies' Social Society.  There are files of correspondence and legal and financial records.

This small collection includes both personal and professional papers. His personal papers contain correspondence and the diary of a trip to California. Two letters of note are one from his wife written while he was abroad; they numbered their letters to each other and she began by noting which ones of his she had received. Another letter is from a friend in the Red Cross, discussing post-war events in Europe. A typed title page to the diary (which is handwritten) gives the trip’s date as 1927. If that is correct, then the diary was not written by Peck (perhaps by his wife?).

The professional papers include some course syllabi and other academic materials and a file of materials relating to a Grinnell College Endowment Campaign.

Office Files contains applications to ACTION, progress reports, correspondence, and budgets. In addition are program evaluations, the CSC newsletter (Bridges), and public relations' materials. Program Files contains files on each program or agency with which student volunteers worked. There are lists of volunteers, correspondence, clippings and public relations materials, and information about the program or agency. The CSC received a great deal of recognition for student involvement with Alternative Breaks in which students worked on service activities instead of taking vacations. Some statistical information regarding student volunteerism can be found in the "Class projects" file.

Consists of transcripts and biographical material for Grinnell students. All information is considered confidential under provisions of 20 U.S.C Section 1232(g) (1982), The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FIRPA) of 1974, as ammended.
