Nilson-Fyfe Papers 1911-1957

This collection includes documents of the Nilsons from 1911 to 1957, encompassing the entire stay of Paul Nilson (and later Harriet Fischer Nilson) within Turkey working as teachers. The first box contains documents from Tarsus, Talas, Diyarbakir, and Mardin, as well as documents relating to Paul and Harriet's retirement from the Mission Board. The second and third boxes contain photographs taken by, or for, the Nilsons during their stay in Turkey.  The fourth and fifth boxes focus on biographical information on the Nilsons, including correspondence, documentation, and addresses delivered about their work. The sixth box contains miscellaneous information that focuses on the students, both correspondences to and from, as well as biographical information about them. This box also contains Key Note addresses to the Mission Board, articles, translated papers, and records about the development of teaching and ministry in Turkey. The collection also contains two books: Academies for Anatolia by Frank Andrew Stone; and Stories from the Vineyard by Dorothy Nilson Fyfe.

This collection was gathered by George T. McJimsey, professor of History at Iowa State University, in the process of writing his book Harry Hopkins: Ally of the Poor and Defender of Democracy. Included are articles written by Hopkins, his personal and professional correspondence, WPA files, minutes from the meetings of the American Association of Social Workers, War Munitions Board minutes, Lend- Lease files, diary entries of top government officials, American Red Cross files among others.

The collection contains information relevant not only to researchers studying Hopkins but also Roosevelt, World War II, Lend- Lease, the New Deal, social work, the American Red Cross, Secretary of War Henry Stimson, the FERA, WPA, CWA, American Association of Social Workers, New York BCW, and NYTBA.

The research is drawn from several collections including the Hopkins Papers at the FDR Library in Hyde Park, the National Archives, the George C. Marshall Papers, the Social Work History Archives in Minneapolis, the Harry S. Truman Library, Parks Library of Iowa State University, New York State Library at Albany, the Library of Congress, University of Virginia Library, the Houghton Library of Harvard University among many others.

Louis Hartson Memoirs 1904-1919

Louis Hartson received his bachelor’s degree from Iowa College in 1908 and returned to teach psychology from 1911-23.  Between the years 1973 and 1976, he recorded his memories of those years and of the following 19 years at Oberlin College.  These memoirs as well as several personal letters are held in this collection.
