Center for International Studies

Founded in 2000 to coordinate and advance the different international initiatives on campus, the Center has become the key office for assisting students and faculty to develop their knowledge of the world. The Center provides leadership and support in the following areas:

Bringing international scholars and artists to campus to enrich the Grinnell curriculum and participate in on-campus events.
Creating opportunities for students and faculty to travel outside the United States to acquire, develop and share knowledge, such as the Faculty Development Seminar.
Working with the Office of Off-Campus Study to develop new opportunities for students, maintain program quality, and identify sites for faculty development.
Creating and maintaining partnerships with key international universities, such as Nanjing University in China.
Working with interdisciplinary faculty groups to develop courses and course clusters that address international issues.
Maintaining electronic resources, such as the Faculty Database, to disseminate knowledge about experiences and interests throughout campus.
Providing leadership in establishing goals and assessing outcomes of international education at Grinnell.
Collaborating with other campus offices and organizations that promote international education to create internationalism across the College.

Cassius C. Stiles Papers

Consists mostly of correspondence relating to Mr. Stiles. The material is both business related and personal in nature, including several articles written by Stiles, a series of request and thank you letters for copies of his book, Manual of Public Archives of Iowa, work recommendations, literature relating to the American Historical Association, general correspondence and a paper written by Fleming C. Fraker, Cassius C. Stiles and the Public Archives of Iowa.

Business Diary of 1862, 1863 Hardin County, Iowa 1886-1863

This handwritten ledger diary was begun on January 1, 1862 in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa. Unknown writer discusses property purchases and disposals; loans and payments; tax information; names of those people with whom he (or she) dealt; on one occasion, the writer asks, “Is he a judge entitled to my respect?” (March 10, 1862). Diary includes long discourses on business dealings (see April 19, 1862). May 20, 1862 entry includes some pressed leaves and a flower. October 4, 1862 entry includes a larger pressed flower. Last entry on February 6, 1863: “I gave up key of the office I occupied up to today in the Court House in Eldora to Ellis Parker(?) as the agent and proper officer of the Eldora Court House joint stock company who claim to own the building. I left some things in the room ….Started about middle of afternoon from Eldora for Grinnell, Iowa, designing to make Grinnell my residence.”

Anton P. Chekhov Letters 1903-1937 1903-1937

The collection consists of a letter from Chekhov’s sister, a replica of Chekhov’s letter (November 2, 1903) to Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko (co-founder of the Moscow Art Theatre), and a note (June 14, 1985) from Kennan explaining the provenance of the Chekhov letter. Also included are photocopies in Russian.
