A transcript of a symposium held at Grinnell College about life in small town America.
A transcript of a symposium held at Grinnell College about life in small town America.
Level used by M.W. Abbott in the erection of the first college building in Grinnell in 1857 and 1858. A history of the level is pasted its side, and reads: "Mr. M.W. Abbott in charge of the contruction of the building assisted by C.D. Kelsey, completed the third story in August 1858. After the death of Mr. Abbott in February 1862, this Plumb & Level came into my possession, and remined to the present time, June 20th, 1898. After nearly fifty years of service, its level and perpendicular abilities are perfect. Though it has witnessed the destruction of the first College Building by fire, and from its ashes "Phoenix" like arose more noble structures, that were destroyed by an irresistible Cyclone in 1882, the motive and immortal principles that were at the foundation of these destroyed temples for eduction, not being destroyed, we are permitted now to behold still greater and more superb structures, that are Plumb and Level with the advanced civilization, and intelligence of this age. Theh possessor of this true and tested implement of correct level and perpendicular habits, having no further use for its service, now donates it to Iowa College for safe keeping for all coming time, hoping and believing that the College will in the future as in the past, be a representative of those principles that are Plumb and Level, and keep pace with the highest moral, scientific, and economic principles that may be advanced by future generations. [signed] C.D. Kelsey"
