Iowa College was founded in Davenport, Iowa in 1846, by a group of ministers from Andover Seminary. This group of eleven misters called themselves The Iowa Band. The college opened its doors in 1848, admitted its first students in 1850, and graduated its first two students in 1854. The college relocated to Grinnell, Iowa, in 1858 and reopened its doors in 1861. The name of the college changed to Grinnell College in 1909.

Biographical history

Steiner was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and emigrated to the United States in 1886. He was born Jewish and converted to Christianity as an adult. He attended Oberlin Theological Seminary and received his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1891. Steiner taught at Grinnell for many years. Steiner Hall on campus is named for him.

Douglas S. Russell is a member of the class of 1971. His father, James Russell, also graduated from Grinnell College in 1941.

Materials include postcards, photographs, a copy of the June 1940 Tanager, Songs of Grinnell, a copy of "St. Peter and I" by Professor Edward Steiner and an accompanying letter from the Alumni Secretary in 1971.
