Anderson, Elizabeth Blagg

Elizabeth Blagg Anderson attended Grinnell College as a student for one year in 1926.  She went on to receive her B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan and her M.S. from Iowa State College, but she returned to Grinnell to teach zoology from 1929-1937.  The Grinnell College Archives received her undated memoirs in the fall of 1990.

Baster, Clara M.

Clara M. Baster (class of 1924) and Anita A. Lucke (class of 1925) were the authors of this manuscript.  Baster was from Benton Harbor, Michigan.  She majored in English and History while a student at the college, lived in Quad, and was active in Honor G and Y.W.C.A.  According to the 1924 Cyclone (p. 46), she was a “good sport,” “jolly companion on picnics,” and had a “keen sense of humor.”  No information is available on Lucke.

Lenabel B. Courtney was probably born about 1883 and died in 1979. She grew up on a farm near Iowa Falls and moved with her family to Henrietta, Texas, when she was about 16. She and her sister, Nellie, received certificates from Iowa College Academy in 1900, having attended the Academy for only one year. Mrs. Courtney's grandson, J. Courtney Wilson, who conducted the interview, is an attorney in New Orleans and is the brother of Grinnell graduate Robert S. Wilson, ’70.

Leggett, Glenn H.

Leggett was a retired president of Grinnell College and former professor of English. He received his B.A. degree from Middlebury College in Vermont and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Ohio State University. Before assuming the presidency at Grinnell, he taught English at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ohio State University, and the University of Washington where he moved into administrative work.

Mr. Leggett was a noted author in the field of English literature and writing; his publications include Handbook for Writers and Theme and Form. After his retirement he delighted family, friends, and colleagues with occasional letters and essays that he had bound and given as gifts.

Salter, William

Salter was a member of the Iowa Band, men who travelled to the Midwest to establish churches and a college. He served as a Congregational clergyman in Burlington, Iowa for over sixty years and was an author and historiographer.
