Tibbs family

The Tibbs family was one of the few black families to live in Grinnell, Mrs. Tibbs living here from 1892 until 1963 when she moved to Omaha. The family members were: James O. Tibbs (1891-1941), Mamie Mary Redrick Tibbs (1892-1973), and their children: Harold (1920-?), Albert (1922-?), Janet (1926-), Shirley (1929-), Roberta (1931-), and Edward Lawrence (1933-?). The family lived at 712 Elm Street at the time when they moved from Grinnell (ca. 1963). Albert and his family lived at 707 Summer Street, 19??-1957.

Stoops, John Dashiell

John Dashiell Stoops was a Professor of Philosophy at Grinnell College from 1904 to 1943 and Professor Emeritus from 1943 until his death in 1973. He earned his A.B. from Dickinson, A.M. from Harvard, and a PhD from Boston University. He was also a graduate student at Union, Columbia, and Clark. He published three books: Ideals of Conduct: An Exposition of Moral Attitudes (1926), The Integrated Life (1951), and The Kingdom of Jesus (1951), as well as numerous articles. This collection includes manuscripts, notes, and correspondence. Unfortunately, almost all of the papers are not dated.

Stiles, Cassius C.

Cassius C. Stiles, born in 1860 in Madison County, Iowa, worked early on as a schoolteacher and then later as the deputy auditor in his home town. In 1907 he was appointed as superintendent to a new division of the State Government to help establish the Public Archives of Iowa, an assignment he served for the next thirty years. In this time he sorted, filed and indexed almost 9 million records pertaining to the Capitol Commission and in the process of doing so, pioneered a new system of subdividing archival material that later greatly simplified the recalling of documents from the archives. The immense effort of Stiles' project placed Iowa as the foremost state in cataloguing materials, and, for the first time, under the direction of Stiles, a comprehensive index of the material belonging to an archive was published.
