The Ladies Reading Circle was founded in 1882 as the first women's literary club in Grinnell, Iowa [c.f. Magoun Club, Ms.01.11]. The purpose of the club was "to gain an intelligent understanding of the world achievements, and its problems, through the study of its history, literature, science, and arts." Before changing its name to the Historical and Literary Club in 1894, the club was called the Historical Circle, the Literary Circle, and the Historical and Literary Circle. Founding members included Lynda Haworth MacDonald, Emily Timmerman Hanlin, Joanna Harris Haines, Mrs. M.G. Phillips, and Mrs. H.K. Snider. The club was a member of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs.

Historical Note: The Community Service Center began in 1988 with a student community service grant from ACTION and with funding from Grinnell College. The mission of the Center is to support volunteer projects that address poverty- related issues, promote positive social change, and develop cross-cultural understanding. Projects in which students have participated fall into seven categories: tutoring projects, social service agencies' programs, and programs serving adults with special needs, children, homeless people, women, and senior citizens. Student volunteers usually commit one to five hours per week on an ongoing basis.

A group of women who had belonged to literary societies at Grinnell College organized Entre Nous in 1908. Originally, papers presented at meetings focused on a central theme, such as Italian cities, Iowa history, or modern sociological problems. Since about 1926 members have presented book reviews at the meetings. Membership is loosely balanced between town- and college-related women.

John H.T. Main served as President of Grinnell College from 1906-1931.
