Selden Lincoln Whitcomb (Class of 1887)

Seldon Whitcomb was born in Grinnell, Iowa, graduated from Grinnell College in 1887, and was professor of English at the college from 1895-1905. Additionally he was a poet and a writer.

Searchlight Club

The Searchlight Club was organized as a reading circle in the summer of 1892 by six Grinnell women. Originally called the "Reading Club", its name was changed at the suggestion of Rev. George White to "Searchlight Club", since its members were "searching for the light" through study of history, current events, and fine arts. Their first constitution was drafted in 1896.

Scott, Kesho

Kesho Scott was an Associate Professor of American Studies and Sociology at Grinnell College who taught at Grinnell College for over thirty-eight years. In March 2024, it was announced that the inaugural endowed chair in the newly established Department of African Diaspora Studies would be named for Scott.

Scheve, Edward B.

Edward Benjamin Scheve was born in Herford, Germany in 1865 and came to the United States around 1890, first to Rochester NY and then to Grinnell, IA in 1906. He was a successful composer and served on the music faculty at Grinnell College from 1906 until his death in 1924. In announcing his death, the college alumni publication, Grinnell and You, stated "He was a great teacher, a great organist, and a great composer. He made Grinnell musical, and any future history of the college and the town will number him among the real founders of Grinnell"

Mary Ellen Sarbauagh donated her papers to Grinnell College April 1995. Most are undated but probably were written 1985-95.
