John Patrick Ryan was a highly respected professor of Public Speaking at Grinnell College from 1903-1947. He was born in New York in 1877 and received his B.A. from Cornell University and his M.A. from the University of Chicago. He originally taught speech and drama within the Department of English at Grinnell College, but after encouraging the development of a Speech Department--one of the first in the country--he became the department head of Speech.
Two of his noted students were Hallie Flanagan Davis (Director of the Federal Theatre Project) and author and professor, Loren Reid. In addition to his college teaching, he taught public speaking to thousands of business and professional people in Des Moines. In 1936 he served as president to the precursor of the Speech Communication Association.Provenance: Donated by Jean Ryan Squires, 1982.

Salter was a member of the Iowa Band, men who travelled to the Midwest to establish churches and a college. He served as a Congregational clergyman in Burlington, Iowa for over sixty years and was an author and historiographer.

The Sanderson family lived in Grinnell in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Catherine primarily stayed in Grinnell while her husband Ben and daughter Sadie traveled along the East Coast working and visiting family. When Sadie grew older, she married D.A. Brooks and moved to Minnesota. Her daughter Mabel grew up with aspirations to become a dancer, and spent time in New York and L.A. The letters also include correspondence from Elias and Vince (?) (Ben's brothers), Sarah (Catherine's sister), Edna (Sadie's cousin), Orison (Sadie's cousin and Elias's son), James (Sadie's brother), and unidentified individuals named Roger, Jas, Ella, and Etta.

A group of WWII veterans went to Crete and sailed the Landing Ship Tank to Mobile, Alabama for the restoration. They arrived in Mobile on January 10, 2001.

Mary Ellen Sarbauagh donated her papers to Grinnell College April 1995. Most are undated but probably were written 1985-95.

Edward Benjamin Scheve was born in Herford, Germany in 1865 and came to the United States around 1890, first to Rochester NY and then to Grinnell, IA in 1906. He was a successful composer and served on the music faculty at Grinnell College from 1906 until his death in 1924. In announcing his death, the college alumni publication, Grinnell and You, stated "He was a great teacher, a great organist, and a great composer. He made Grinnell musical, and any future history of the college and the town will number him among the real founders of Grinnell"
